Kurt Donald Cobain The Singer Of The Grunge Band Nirvana

Kurt Donald Cobain was an American musician most famous for his role as the lead singer of the grunge band Nirvana. Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in Hoquiam, Washington, but spent most of his childhood in Aberdeen, Washington (â€Å"Kurt Cobain†, 2015). Cobain was an only child until his sister was born when he was three, dethroning him as the baby of the family. He was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder as a child, and would often hide in his closet (â€Å"Kurt Cobain†, 2015). Cobain’s parents divorced when he was nine years old, after experiencing their fighting throughout his early childhood. When his father remarried, he began pulling away from him, believing that his dad always took his step-mother’s side, eventually growing†¦show more content†¦Cobain became more open about his drug habits with the media, and had multiple police visits to his home for drug related incidents. While on tour in Europe in 1994, Cobain overdos ed in a hotel room, a clear attempt at suicide, as Cobain had left a note (â€Å"Kurt Cobain†, 2015). After waking up from a coma, Cobain entered a rehab facility in Los Angeles, but checked himself out after a few days (â€Å"Kurt Cobain†, 2015). The challenge with diagnosing Kurt Cobain is distinguishing between major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Major depressive disorder is characterized by more than five depressive episodes in a two week period, so it is hard to diagnose from that alone, seeing as Cobain’s exact history is not documented. It also involves a depressed and sad mood, and lessened interest in activities that previously brought happiness (Comer, 2015). After returning from Europe, where he had attempted suicide, Cobain began spending the majority of his time alone and on drugs (â€Å"Kurt Cobain†, 2015). Patients with major depressive disorder can show manic and hypomanic symptoms that vary in length and severity, causing challenges in diagnosis between depressive disorder and bipolar disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). It is most likely that Cobain suffered from Type II Bipolar Disorder: a hypomanic episode with a major depressive episode
